The history of The Nut Shop begins back in 1979 with the birth of an idea. In 1979, Cecil Williams opened A-1 Sharpening to serve Tuscaloosa and the surrounding communities with all their sharpening needs.
As a thank you to his customers and a gift during the holiday season, one year at Christmas, Cecil decided to roast peanuts at home and give them away. A customer who owned several local convenience stores came in and wanted some peanuts to sell at their stores. The peanuts were delivered to the stores, and the customer called back – they needed a name for the company that made the deliveries! And thus, The Nut Shop was born.
The Nut Shop was officially established in 1992, with the help of Cecil’s wife, Margaret. Both businesses were run by Cecil and Margaret, with the help of their children Terry, Jeremy, Cecilia, and Cerrell, their spouses, as well as their eight grandchildren. Until 2020, A-1 Sharpening and The Nut Shop were run out of the same building at 1508 Greensboro Avenue. After 40 years, in 2020, Cecil decided to close the sharpening business to focus solely on nuts, candies, and concessions. As time passed, the business of The Nut Shop grew and expanded swiftly. What started as a simple “thank you” to local customers turned into the wide-reaching business the The Nut Shop is today!
The Nut Shop now offers over 60 items, both retail and wholesale, which can be purchased separately, in a gift tray, or gift basket. Not only does The Nut Shop’s sales include personal and corporate sales, but we also sell industrially. The number of stores The Nut Shop has serviced in its illustrious past grew from eight to over 200. Today, The Nut Shop proudly services about 150 stores in Central Alabama and across Mississippi. The Nut Shop is also involved with all the local schools and colleges, providing concessions, supplies, and Nut Shop goodies to the next generation. So, whether you are looking for a midday snack, gifts, or concessions supplies to keep everyone entertained, The Nut Shop has it all!
